North Korean Film Art
Southern Barbarian, 2F Area E, 56 Maoming Nanlu, nr Jinxian Lu
3pm to 6pm, June 20th free beer
From the “North Korean Titanic” to a film starring real-life American defectors, come and see how the Hermit Kingdom’s most popular films are advertised to the masses. The first ever Shanghai show of these handpainted posters includes an ad for The Nation and Destiny, an astonishing 88-hour long “multipart film”, which took the entire North Korean film and television industry a decade to make. Grab a cold free beer, munch some goats’ cheese and open your mind to some North-Korean-style entertainment, including a rare chance to see a film about the country’s iconic traffic ladies, who are human traffic lights.
North Korea’s biggest film buff is its “Dear Leader” Kim Jong Il, so cinema plays a huge part in conveying moral and social messages to society, and is a valuable insight into an otherwise mysterious culture. Themes of personal sacrifice dominate, with intolerable suffering rewarded by gratitude from the leader. These should be viewed in the context of North Korea’s occupation, war and struggle for personal or global survival.
Koryo Studio commissioned this collection during the 2002 Pyongyang Film Festival for Non-Aligned Countries (now more snappily named the Pyongyang International Film Festival). We are also showing six pen and ink prints from the private collection of Nick Bonner of Koryo Tours. Prices range from the affordable 1500RMB to 3500RMB.
Koryo tours consultant and North Korean film buff, Nancy Pelligrini, will be on hand to talk about North Korean films, art and travel to the Hermit Nation.
